Project Goal

To determine how we might use circular design principles to innovate the way we produce, use and access everyday clothing items.

With this goal, we created Everthread. The following animation is an introduction to Everthread used to pitch the overall idea.

Our Process

Everthread began with the problem statement: How might we close the loop in the fashion industry by reintroducing the returns, dead-stock, and overstock from brands back into the manufacturing process?

Our Solution

We wanted to tackle fast fashion at its core contributors - big brands. Instead of changing consumer shopping habits or diverting them to a new brand, we're altering the process of the ones they already know and love.

Our process transforms the traditional take-make-dispose model into a circular system, while not requiring businesses to make any large process or system changes within their own business.

First, we connect with brands and organize the pickup and shipment of their dead-stock, overstock and customer returns to our facility.

Next, the clothing is sorted and labelled based on brand, textile purity components and shipment dates.

The clothing is then shipped to our recycling partner to be upcycled back into base material thread.

Once the clothing is turned into thread, we purchase the textile components back and ship the thread to our brand partners’ manufacturing plants to be re-integrated into the manufacturing of new products.

This means that once unwanted clothing has the opportunity to be turned into something new rather than be disposed of. Using recycled

thread also means that the manufacturing plant doesn’t have to use nearly as many virgin materials.

With this concept, we created

Why EverThread?

By talking to SMEs and throughout our rigorous research, we found that many companies would love to change their ways but that it is simply too costly in time and resources to change their whole manufacturing process.

Setting up a recycling system at a company would involve massive staff increases and time invested to create such a partnership, but with Everthread, brands keep their current processes relatively the same while we do all of the connection work behind the scenes for a buy-in fee that covers our costs.

Viability & Prototyping

In order to gauge the potential success of our ecosystem, we created two prototypes.

Mailchimp Landing Page

A form indicating interest that we sent to real companies to generate leads. 75% of those who clicked the link indicated an interest in our program. Click here to view the email.

Animation (shown above)

This video was an effective way to pitch our concept directly to a company to gauge viability. I created all graphics and animation, script and audio created by a team member.

We are constantly looking for new solutions dealing with deadstock. We currently have numerous systems set up to responsibly dispose of deadstock. However, recycling textiles is an industry crux. If a program such as [Everthread] was set up and met all of MEC’s standards we would be interested in taking part.

Financial Viability

In order to further gauge viability, we created an in-depth financial analysis of our business to further express how we would successfully become financially viable. Our analysis went over expenses, COGS, and net income. To view our full financial sheet Click Here.

Our solution enables clothing brands to seamlessly become circular without disrupting their business operations. Everthread enables clothing brands to capture lost material and monetary value from unwanted and unsold textiles, saving the brand money while also reducing their waste.

SYMBOLS copy2.jpg

For each asset of our project, we chose to include small illustrations or symbols to better explain our project and enhance page layouts visually. The assets were included in our final presentation, our prototypes, animation, and our proposal, which I collaborated on creating with our group's UX designer.
